The first celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It begins in darkness, as we gather in our community garden to kindle a new fire and light the Paschal Candle, proclaiming that “the light of Christ” has come into the world.
From there, we enter the church by candlelight and hear the great stories of our faith: creation, deliverance, and God’s saving work through the ages, tracing the sweep of salvation history. As the service unfolds, darkness gives way to light, and silence gives way to song.
At the heart of the Vigil, we renew our baptismal promises, remembering that in baptism, we are united with Christ in his death and raised with him in new life. As has been the Church’s tradition for centuries, this year, we welcome new members through the sacrament of Confirmation and Reception in to the Episcopal Church.
Then, with great joy, we proclaim the resurrection: Alleluia! Christ is risen. The church is filled with light, bells, and music as we celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter.
If you are able to attend only one service during Holy Week, this is the one. It is the fullest expression of the Christian faith: moving from darkness to light, from death to life, from silence to joy.
Everyone is welcome, especially you.
