Music at St. Alban’s UPCOMING CONCERT Jan 22nd 4pm

Dr. Jenny Soonjin Kim is an internationally recognized musical artist originally from Korea. She started her musical journey at age 5, when she started to play the piano. At age 10, she was inspired by the renowned Korean professor and master musician, Nakho Paik, from Seoul National University, where she earned a BA in piano performance. Dr. Kim is best known for playing the fortepiano, the modern piano, and the harpsichord. (Complete bio below)

Dr. Kim’s first international appearance was when she was selected to perform in Wiener Saal in Salzburg, Austria. In an effort to pursue her dreams and continue to develop professionally, she came to the United States, where she obtained a Master’s Degree in piano performance at the University of Southern California (USC). Thereafter, she received a diploma in Music Business: Music Management and Merchandising from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). This experience broadened her musical perspective, and reaffirmed her passion for music, and playing the piano, which led her to fulfill the Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in Historical Performance Practices/Keyboard Studies from Claremont Graduate University in California.

In her role as a renowned international artist, Dr. Kim has performed in major international venues in Europe, Asia, and North America. In 2019, she was invited to perform at the China Sanya International Piano Festival and in Taipei, Taiwan. She also performed Kozeluch’s First Piano Concerto in F Major with the Philharmony Hradec Králové at Smetana Hall, Prague in October 2019.  She also was invited to perform in October 2020 for the celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday in Vienna, which is currently being edited to be released soon by Sony Music. Her upcoming live performances include the Lincoln Center in New York City, where she has been invited to perform Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, and in Spain where she will perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto with the Orquestra Sinfónica de Torrevieja. Her diverse performances also include playing the harpsichord as a soloist and collaborating with string ensembles.

Dr. Kim also enjoys serving as an international judicator for notable events including the Scriabin International Piano Competition to be held in Grosseto, Italy in July 2021; the U.S. Golden State International Strings & Piano Competition in August 2021 sponsored by the Chinese government.

As a dynamic and prolific artist throughout her career, not only has she recorded keyboard works ranging from Bach to Schoenberg for Arabesque Records (which once nominated her for the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award), but also the complete keyboard sonatas of both Leopold Kozeluch and Johann Friedrich Doles (a world premiere) on fortepiano for Brilliant Classics. The complete, 12-CD Box-Set recording of the 50 keyboard sonatas of Kozeluch was released in October 2020. You can also enjoy her beautiful music on a variety of different sources including Apple Music, YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, etc.

Sylvia Berry (Early Music America) wrote of the second Kozeluch volume: “Kim’s playing is crystalline and lyrical, with exquisitely sensitive phrasing. She is an assured virtuoso who interprets Kozeluch’s music beautifully.”  Marco Frei (Germany’s Piano News) wrote of the Doles recording: “Once again the instrument convinces with an unheard-of floating tonal quality in piano and a voluminous expression in forte, and Kim knows how to use this fascinating richness of color perfectly…With this premiere recording Kim has taken an exemplary view, because it brings together the sound poetry and the gripping verve in a meaningful way.”

As a lifelong learner, artist, performer, and educator, one of her passions is for Korean music and culture. She enjoys being an ambassador for this, and would like to continue to share her culture with audiences on a larger scale. Dr. Kim is currently an Assistant Professor of Practice at Claremont Graduate University, overseeing its piano/fortepiano program and directing Keyboard Performance Forum. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Master Chorale since 2015. As a consummate professional artist, her passion and love for piano has given her such fulfillment and joy, that her goal is to share her art and craft with her audiences. She feels that by sharing her music and knowledge with her students, she can immortalize her art.
